Show #041: Social Media Butterfly

Happy Third Anniversary, Survivalists! Three years of advice, interviews, rants, and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Moments. What an amazing ride that is far from over! Forging ahead, I’m taking a look at Social Media on the web. This is a new avenue for authors, but it’s good to know what you’re getting into.

I’m also calling out the Survivalists to show support for an independent bookstore in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia. They have been there for me and for Dragon Moon Press…

Now it is time to pay it forward!

REMEMBER: E-mail’s, blog comments, mp3’s, and Voice Mail 703.791.1701 — sound off, Troops, and let the Sarge know what’s on your mind!

  1. Arkle Says:

As one of the people who sent things like fake drinks and Werewolf bites to you on Facebook, I apologize. I was only trying to get points, not really caring who if anyone accepted since for some apps just the sending got me points, and I didn’t stop to think about how annoying it must’ve been.

  2. The Sarge Says:

    Now, now now…that wasn’t my point. ;)

I’m not annoyed with the friends sending me stuff…but the sheer VOLUME of friends sending me stuff. I admit, it makes me feel loved. It’s only when I get twenty of these “Li’l Green Patches” I get punchy. Add to that when I do accept the “application” I would think “Once is enough…”

Oh no…at least with my Facebook, I have to go through the acceptance process EVERY TIME. Some of these apps launch OTHER apps, I’ve noticed, and then I can’t get out of the process. I’ll admit — either I’m doing it wrong or these apps are just a timesink. So until I get a better grasp of what these apps are and how they work, I’m just having to ignore them.

No, I’m not upset with my friends/followers on Facebook. It’s just the way these apps you get behave that annoy me.

  3. Scott Sigler Says:

Mega-props to moi? For keeping perspective? Surely, you jest. I am trying to become the biggest thing since gravity. That’s right, GRAVITY!

  4. The Sarge Says:

Oh lookie here….WE HAVE A COMEDIAN IN OUR MIDST…

Yes, I said “Perspective”, Future Dark Overloaded Idea of Self-Worth, because at least YOU have the swagger and the moxie — not to mention the credibility — to be a complete and utter tewrp, but you choose the higher ground. Soldier, I appreciate that. It tells me that even you, you worthless piece of amphibious poo, still manage to remain humble even within your success.

NOW DROP AND GIVE ME TWENTY, OR SO HELP ME I WILL RIP OFF YOUR HEAD AND USE IT AS AN ASH TRAY FOR MY CIGARS!!!!

    (You rock, Siggy!)

  5. J.R. Murdock Says:

Great episode Sarge. moderation, moderation, moderation. Perfect message. :)

  6. Helen E. H. Madden Says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been drowning in Yahoo groups the last month or two, along with other social media junk, and after listening to this episode, I’ve made the decision to cut a lot of it down. I generally can’t stand the Yahoo groups because for erotica/romance writers they’re usually just dumping grounds for excerpts, promos and contests, no actual real conversation going on. Instead, I’m going to go back to the things I know I enjoy - reading and commenting on other writer’s blogs, keeping up my podcast, and investing more time in my web comic. I know those things get me more visitors to my website, plus I enjoy doing them. I never signed up for Face Book or MySpace, and after listening to what you had to say about it, I don’t think I will. I’ll probably also avoid Shelfari, Good Reads, and other groups like that.

I’m a work-at-home mom, so I’ve got to be realistic about what I can afford to spend time on. I’d rather spend my promo time on stuff I enjoy rather than waste it on things that drive me crazy.

    Thank you, Tee!

  7. Daniel Warner Says:

    Great show.

I agree with everything you said about Twitter — it is about what you can add to the conversation.

Heard the promo for ‘Viga the Otagal’ was interested, couldn’t find it.
You have it listed as ‘Vita’ the Otagal in the show notes.
