The Great Lesson Learned Through Art

It’s 2009…and the Quest continues….

Dammit, that means I need
to re-record the KarkensQuest promo.

KrakenThief and I grappled together on Twitter concerning the previous episode and miscommunication, but alas — I understand now what it was that KrakenThief was attempting to do. KrakenThief was sending me on a second quest, a quest for truth, for understanding, for inspiration…

And yes, I found my inspiration to carry on in my search for #68:

Who says you can’t learn something from great art?

So we enter the new year with great expectations, and more challenges to fulfill.

But seriously…about KrakenThief…

KrakensQuest is, by far, the most impulsive thing I have ever done in podcasting. The idea hit me “Yeah, I should turn this into a podcast!” and has become an experiment in recording off the top of my head while keeping my rantings and silliness under ten minutes. Seven episodes later, I’m still managing to do so. With no real promotional push, I have won over 150 concerned listeners, all wondering the whereabouts of my beloved #68 jersey…

With this latest episode, though, I might have been too convincing in my rant. I’ve been picking up on Twitter and in the two comments left (Thank you, Pip and Thomas!) some growing animosity towards KrakenThief. I felt like this would be a good time step in and maybe clear the air…and also stick up for the clever mind(s) behind this prank.

As many of you know from my other podcasts, 2008 has been a less than stellar year for me. Aside from Double Trouble, it’s been as LOLCats would say “teh suk.” In May, some friends hatched a hair-brained scheme and did what friends do — they went out of their way to make me smile. Hence, KrakenThief came to life and started this wacky reality game show where I did silly, goofy, or creatively challenging tasks to win back my jersey. I know there is a lot of love behind this practical joke as was made evident by the presentation of the baseball jersey at Dragon*Con. This summer I have been having a blast while dealing with a lot of crap, and I’m discovering I’ve got a lot of friends out there who are keeping an eye on me. For that I am eternally grateful.

If I am concerned about this prank going “too long, too far” it’s how the teasing at Dragon*Con eluded to returning the jersey and revealing who was behind KrakenThief, only to have said jersey and KrakenThief remain in hiding. No problem with a sudden change of plan, but to go over two months with no challenges and no images behind the jersey’s whereabouts? That does give me pause. Has something happened to my jersey? Is there a new Twitter/podcast gathering where KrakenThief will have a new test for me? Is the jersey en route to another far-off country?

It would not be a surprise at all (and I would laugh my ass off) if I see it appear in New Zealand!

In all seriousness, I bear no ill will against the twisted mind(s) behind this prank…so long as KrakenThief continues with the challenges and keeps it fun, I’m all in. If something has gone wrong and the jersey really IS missing…well, I’d like to know that too.

I’m not asking for people to hunt down my jersey’s kidnappers nor would I ever hope you all listening would turn against those behind the KrakenThief persona. This has been a LOT of fun. I’m just ready for something new to do, for my jersey’s sake.

You hear me, KrakenThief?!
I’m ready for you!
Make your move!

This New-Found Optimism Finally Got to Me…

I wanted to believe in a time for change…but yes, the silence, the lack of communication, and the concerned listeners asking me about my Krakens jersey pushed me beyond the edge…

The gloves are off, and I call out Krakenthief!
(Special thanks to Lacuna Coil for the music used in this episode)

You Tease Me So, KrakenThief…

August proved to be a somewhat insane time, not only for myself and my hectic touring schedule but for KrakenThief as well. In my travels along the East Coast, KrakenThief continued to plan, even though I was offline…

Then as I traveled down south to Atlanta for Dragon*Con 2008, I discovered after checking into my hotel that my jersey (still jetlagged I’m sure from its tour of France) was enjoying some fun in the sun Mexico style.

No, not Mexico…but Mexico style

Yes, the jersey was in fact following me to Dragon*Con! I received confirmation of this as I was told by many of the people tweeting around me at the 2008 Parsec Awards that Krakenthief was watching me.

I sent back to Krakenthief a simple, non-digital, real-time reply…

After my curt retort to Krakenthief, a “distraction” from the evening’s proceedings was presented to me…

…soon followed by the 2008 Parsec Award for Best Audio Drama (Long Form), awarded to Billibub Baddings and The Case of The Singing Sword.

The evening was a mix of emotions, and while I did walk away with two unexpected prizes, my beloved jersey is still out there.

And with tweets like these:

— I enjoyed watching u play w that giant fuzzy 20 sided die, Tee —

— @TeeMonster Did U or Did U not see my tweets from August 27th? —

— @TeeMonster Those would have been my tweets from August 30…
not August 27 - They are different. —

My theory concerning Krakenthief’s identity (or should I say, multiple identities?) is given validation. One more piece in the puzzle, finding purchase.

At the Movies

My jersey and I have a lot in common. One thing we share is a passion for the movies

So my latest challenge, a movie review, wasn’t such a challenge as I love catching flicks at the box office. There were quite a few to choose from; but as I am in hell over the state of my beloved jersey, I decided to go with a comedy. I decided to enjoy a good laugh. I decided to…

Anne Hathaway…nom-nom-nom

So, what did I think? Have a listen and find out. And stick around for the end to hear of additional trouble I’m getting into on 08.08.08!

A Good Deed When in Need

My jersey enjoyed a moment of freedom, risking its own safety to break free, but its own brilliance could not be missed…

Now comes the new challenge: a photo of myself in clothes up next for donation to charity. Seeing as getting sick, producing a podcast, and planning a book tour (more information coming soon) slowed down my schedule, I put together three outfits to make amends:

Start here to follow this challenge from beginning to end. Also in this episode, discover the fatal error that krakenthief made on Twitter…

Will KrakenThief slip again? Will I get my jersey back in one piece? Where will my jersey appear next? And what will the next challenge be?

Sing along if you know the words…

The demands were simple enough: Record “RE: Your Brains” by Jonathan Coulton and play it on a podcast.

Why did the challenge take a musical turn? My jersey, apparently, is a fan.

So, I present to you Jonathan Coulton’s RE: Your Brains, featuring the “Free the Frakkin’ Kraken” Singers:

The conspiracy continues, as do I.
