Lisa Lee has been a self-avowed bookworm ever since she can recall. She wrote her first story (unpublished) at age 6. Growing up in the small town of Kangar in Perlis, Malaysia, she had ample time to read and was influenced by such visionaries as George MacDonald and J.R.R. Tolkien.
While working as the editor of school magazines, Lisa wrote several articles for the youth sections of Malaysian newspapers. Her greatest passion has always been fiction, preferably the Fantasy genre. Lisa believes these writers do not get the acknowledgment they deserve. |
I don't think it's fair that most authors of High Fantasy are looked down upon in literary circles. Certainly none have ever managed to become as acclaimed as Tolkien, for whom fame only came after his death, and even so most of the public have never read his books. To me, Fantasy is not a children's genre. A Fantasy writer must be a politician, a visionary, a prophet, a sociologist, biologist and psychologist all rolled into one, and sometimes the messages that their parallel versions of reality can present are startling.

As a daughter in a liberated (more-or-less) family of women in a traditional, multiculturally-structured Southeast Asian society, she writes from observations on daily life and dynamics of the male-female power struggle. This provided the rich and intricate background for Morevi. |
I thought that it would be interesting to turn the tables. A revolution that left women in power. Most people have a skewed view of the Amazonian myths, and most modern retellings present the women as glorified sex objects. Of course, love and sexuality are a part of this story, but our focus is on how this abrupt change affects the society, families, and individuals, and how everyone readjusts. We also explore the reactions of other societies with different rules and values to this change. I think basically the book looks at how the power struggle between sexes affects our lives and loves, and poses the question: Who should have the most power? Is a true partnership at all possible?
I will admit I found it fun to throw Morevi against England in the 16th century! I mean, King Henry VIII was a great king with vision and intelligence, but he was also one of the greatest male chauvinist pigs in recorded history!

At the moment Lisa is studying at the University of New South Wales in Australia and is exploring the possibilities and opportunities on the Internet, writing for assorted sites including 3AM Magazine . MOREVI is her first novel, and she has already outlined the skeleton of another Fantasy series.
