The MOREVI Exit Interview (Part One)
Posted by admin on Feb 02 2009 | 2 Comments »
Well met, Crew, and welcome to 2009!
After a month of silence (which you will find out why in this exit interview), I’m returning to the blog to give you all a real treat. This is the exit interview for MOREVI, hosted by Cian McMahon and featuring special guest Pip Ballantine. I’ll be posting Part Two tomorrow, so you won’t have to wait too long in between segments. There will be more news coming concerning the Legacy of MOREVI podcast, but until then enjoy the banter between the Warrior Queen, the English privateer captain, and the Irish Teenager!
This extra long episode (just under an hour) of View From The Quad is the first half of the Exit Interview I did with Tee Morris and Philippa Ballantine about Tee’s podiobook, Morevi, which can be downloaded in full from Morevi.net.
Please note that at the time of recording, it seemed that both Pip and Tee were not going to make it through the day. They had a serious case of Con-Funk and a two hour long interview was pretty much the last thing that they needed to be doing.
With this in mind, I have developed a drinking game for this interview.
Take one drink any time one of the following happens:
- Tee blows his nose.
- Pip punches Tee or Tee says “Owwwwwwwh!”
- Tee drinks Tea.
- Cian, Pip, Tee or any of the phone-in guests make a terrible joke which bombs, and Cian edits out the silence to make it sound less terrible.
- Anybody refers to the “Tee Morris… You Are Muted” meme from the last call-in show I did with him
Sponsor: Try GotoMeeting free for 30 days! For this special offer, visit www.gotomeeting.com/podcasts
Thanks for listening, and come back next time to hear lots more phonecalls, some terrible humour, and finally find out if Pip and Tee cough out their lungs.

Happy Thanksgiving, Crew!
No, I’m not celebrating the Day of the Turkey’s Demise with a super-sized episode, but I am delivering this episode with very little banter, a new sponsor, and 100 minutes of story. Just to give a bit of history…

Crew, I can’t believe the events of today. I’ll skip the details (and save them for a posting on TeeMorris.com) and tell it to you plainly…
Something went squirrelly with my MacPro.
After eighteen months of struggling with this machine, I put my foot down and talked to a lot of people at AppleCare. At the end of the day, we came to a compromise:
THE GOOD NEWS: The MacPro is finally being replaced. Apple has even agreed to replace it with a better model.
THE BAD NEWS: The replacement will take 4-6 business days to arrive. That is before the new Apple Store at Fair Oaks assist me in the data transfer.
This setback is particularly heartbreaking as Chapter Eighteen is really coming together. It will be another jumbo-sized episode, so be ready for it; but batten down the hatches as the Defiant is now sailing through stormy waters. Stay the course, Crew. I will not let you down.
Watch for Chapter Eighteen: The Cost of a Crown

Hey, Crew. I really didn’t expect to still be podcasting MOREVI: Remastered up to this point but seeing as I’m here, I thought I would just take a moment out to get philosophical, look back on this experience, and give a head’s up on what will be coming soon…
…and seeing as I’m voicing a pirate I should go on and dare the authorities with a fool-hearty act of defiance. If you’ve never heard Jimmy Buffett and The Coral Reefer Band before, enjoy this track that seems quite poignant for today.

A Double Trouble Interview: Jack Mangan’s Deadpan
Posted by admin on Aug 07 2008 | Comment now »
This has the feel of Double Trouble: After Dark but we actually recorded this in the afternoon.
Well, okay, Jack and I recorded in the afternoon…Pip was in the early morning hours in Wellington, New Zealand; but in this interview we had a lot of fun breaking Deadpan. The podcast is Jack Mangan’s Deadpan (a.k.a The International Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster Lolapalooza), and Pip and I were hoping to bring a little bit of sophistication, class, and prestige to Jack’s “Pot Luck” podcast…
EPIC FAIL!
Taking Care Bears into places we never wanted them to go and giving in to the ways of Deadpan, the First Queen and Privateer Captain let loose and get goofy with the Mangan…a voice you will hear in a future episode of MOREVI.
PRODUCTION UPDATE: The new Alesis Multimix-8 is here and working at full capacity. No annoying hum. This means once Double Trouble: Phase One (The Amazon Rush) is wrapped, I try to crank out a new chapter before Phase Two which is the New Media Expo. Be there for 08.08.08, and I’ll see you in Vegas, baby, for Geekalicious Goodness!
A Double Trouble Interview (After Dark): The Polyshizmatic Reprobates Hour
Posted by admin on Aug 05 2008 | Comment now »
How do you top maxing out someone’s bandwidth? (Sorry, Monty…) You crank up the raunch and head on to another wild and wacky podcast. This time Double Trouble: After Dark heads on over to the Polyschizmatic Reprobates Hour with your host, J. Daniel Sawyer. The three of us logged on late in a Friday night (What is it about Friday night interviews and our silliness level?) …and we let it fly!
So, once again, this episode is NOT work safe, NOT kid safe, and BEST LISTENED with earbuds, headphones, or in the comforts of your office or studio…by yourself. In the words of Dan, this DTAD interview got naughtier than an earlier appearance made by Cunning Minx. (To which both Rafe and Askana replied with “WOW!”)
You have been warned…
…and now that you have been warned, Pip and I hope you have as much fun as we did on this interview!

Something about the sun going down and the host feeling a bit randy brings out the silly, goofy, and somewhat raunchy side of your Captain and First Queen. This is why I am dubbing these interviews the “Double Trouble After Dark” series…
Going by the monikers of Podcasting’s Beefcake and Sex-Kitten-Librarian, Tee and Pip visit Friday Night Live with Monty. They spend, maybe, ten minutes of the show promoting Double Trouble…and then proceed to spend the remaining show time goofing around. This podcast is a nice way to kick off a beginning of the week commute, is far shorter than the Backseat Producers epic, and is definitely not work-safe…
…it is also a h00t to listen to!
UPDATE: If you are wondering why Monty’s podcast isn’t downloading, it’s because Pip and I have maxed out Monty’s bandwidth. Perhaps later, with the permission of the show host, I will carry the show in my feed.

For those of you who heard the Erk Pod Interview, you were probably wondering what Pip and I were talking about with all the references to “keeping my Indiana Jones Rant under control…”, here is Part One of Two of where that comes from…and this rant is a more subdued version of the Captain coming completely unhinged when talking about the latest Spielburg-Lucas offering.
Welcome to Screengeeks! We do manage to talk about Double Trouble along with summer movies, what worked and didn’t worked at the box office, and the movie-going experience on a whole. We also discuss the challenge in writing sequels.

In the interim (which shouldn’t be that big of a delay), I present to you a terrific interview with the brew-mistress herself, Jenn Baker, and her podcast, Creative Adventures, found at YourCre8tivity.com. After getting in more than a mouthful on the movie podcasts, Tee is schooled on a podcast coming out of the Southern Hemisphere. (Good thing he knows the “Bruce” sketch by heart, otherwise, he would be completely sunk!) Tee and Pip enjoy some quality time on Erk Pod’s Round Table where the chat is lively and quite geeky! Enjoy the banter between siblings (Australia and New Zealand) while Tee does his best to uphold the reputation of the average obnoxious American…
…and somewhere in there, they do talk a bit about Double Trouble!

A Double Trouble Interview: Tea & Chat
Posted by admin on Jul 16 2008 | Comment now »
Pip and Tee are showing no signs of slowing as they continue their push for August 8, 2008. In this interview with Stephen Kilbride of Tea & Chat we push Skype as hard as we can by juggling time zone and talking…a LOT! This was great fun as the chat covered a lot of ground and even included a visit from a cast member from the original MOREVI 2005 podcast.
And if you are curious…I’m putting the final touches on Chapter Fourteen right now. Hold on tight. It’s a big’un!!!

A Double Trouble Interview: Dead Robots Society

The media blitz of “Double Trouble”, the joint promotion on 08.08.08 where Pip and I take our new books up the Amazon.com charts, continues with an interview on Dead Robots Society. This podcast is a terrific round table for writers where the talk ranges from writing challenges to all things geeky. (There is some chatter in this episode about EUReKA…) The New Zealand Kiwi and Virginia Ham join Justin and Amanda for some unbridled banter about what they are up to and what they are planning for their Friday in August.
Expect to hear Tee and Pip on these fine podcasts in the future…
- Friday Night Live with Monty
- Tea & Chat
- I Should Be Writing
- J.C. Hutchins’ Ultra Creatives
- The Dragon Page: Cover-to-Cover
….and many, many more!
And before you ask…
Chapter Fourteen is almost done! Expect more from Rafe & Askana this week!
A Double Trouble Interview: Tech for Writers
Posted by admin on Jul 06 2008 | Comment now »
As many of you Snitches and Bitches (from the Billibub Baddings podcast) may know, “Billi’s Crazy Eights” has now evolved into “Double Trouble” with author, podcaster, and the voice of the First Queen herself, Philippa Ballantine, joining me on the 08.08.08 rush on Amazon.com.
Why, you may ask? Take a listen to this interview with Tech for Writers, a podcast that focuses on the different gadgets out there specifically designed for writers. Along with the background on “Double Trouble” expect to hear banter between the New Zealand Kiwi and Virginia Ham, tech tips for podcasting a novel, and some good old fashioned geeking out.
And yes, this is the first Double Trouble interview. Expect more as we close in on 08.08.08, Amazon’s day of Double Trouble!

Hey, Crew…
I am not neglecting my duties as Captain, but wow — Fourteen is going to need some work. I mean, some work. So, in the meantime, I want to share with you a fun “behind the scenes” sit-down with Dead Robots Society’s Justin Macumber…
This is the unplugged Tee Morris where we talk about podcasting, writing schedules, friendships forged, and juggling loves and passions while facing real life. Enjoy, Crew.
Stay the course — Chapter Fourteen is underway…

The Über-Nemesis is challenged…
Posted by admin on Jun 04 2008 | 2 Comments »
Being stranded in Salisbury, MD got me a touch concerned as I wanted to post this challenge for Thursday morning. Then it dawned on me that, yes, I can make this post happen…just without the snarky introduction from me. *LOL*
So, now that you know the backstory, have a listen to the challenge issued…
Interlude: Birth of the Über-Nemesis!

The Defiant brings cannons to bear…
With P.G. Holyfield, Nobilis, and Chris Lester (and MOREVI’s own Christiana Ellis coming in late for the rant) in attendance, I recorded for The Survival Guide to Writing Fantasy a Whiskey Tango Foxtrot moment. This (far too silly to be taken seriously) rant was inspired by the First Queen of Morevi herself. Recorded in front of a studio audience, this was my rebuttal against the “new trend” amongst podcast fiction authors.
Thursday morning, you will hear the answer to my challenge.
Let the mayhem commence!
A Pirate’s Lament
Posted by admin on Jun 02 2008 | Comment now »
Hi again, Crew…
Justin Vactor passed this heartfelt story on Twitter and it made me realize that a dream I once had — working for Disney — carries a heavy price, far heavier than the Aztec Gold the Black Pearl once plundered.
Pirate’s Booty: The Story of a Jack Sparrow Impersonator (featured on LAMag.com)
I do understand you have to run a business and maintain a level of professionalism. I’ve seen, on a much smaller scale, “character control” like this and I would agree that some actors are irresponsible enough that a sharp eye must be kept on them. There is this belief that “The Art” is the same thing as a free pass to go beyond the boundaries of good taste. In my years as an actor I’ve seen individuals (that I would hesitate to describe as “professionals”) abuse the term “Artistic Expression”, attempting to use said term as a means of justifying behavior that makes them into a complete horse’s ass. For whatever reason, these idiots abandon all decorum; and afterward, blame it on the character they are portraying. “That wasn’t me,” they would say. “That was the character.”
No, you moron, that was you. The character isn’t the one cashing the check at the end of the day.
However, I would argue there are better ways of handling your talent. The actor paying Sparrow strikes me as one of the more responsible ilk of actors. No, he was hardly perfect and he admits to bending (and on occasion, breaking) the rules at Disneyland; but he kept his behavior well within the parameters of Disney. (And yes, the Disney rules are rules…not guidelines…) In this article, the joy of paying homage to Johnny Depp’s lovable pirate captain is evident; and it was also evident that when this actor was in the “Jack Sparrow” element, he was having a blast. He was having a blast within the confines of good taste. This actor was practicing sound judgment and a professional attitude. What was so wrong with that?
I have always been a fan of Disney, but not so much a fan of the Disney Corporation. I ask myself “Where is the line drawn?” Instead of passing judgment based on YouTube videos and a “guy-in-line” interview given at the POTC: At World’s End premiere (where the actor was well within the Disney parameters), Disney should have evaluated his performance on park property. Did he offend park attendees? Did he handle himself as a professional? Did this Jack Sparrow keep up the persona created in the films without crossing boundaries? If they had found this actor not performing in a professional manner, then Disney had every right to let him go. Sadly, Disney terminated this actor’s contract in a manner far from professional. For the actor to show up and see someone else in his job puts both actors in awkward positions. (I’ve seen this happen, on both sides and from the outside; and it is never pretty…) That was a dumb move on Disney’s part.
If Disney wants robots, then use the “automatronics” they got down better than anyone else. If you want interaction and real-time street play, then use actors…but remember the actors aren’t cattle, aren’t machines, aren’t property. They are people — real, breathing, warm, emotional, and passionate. Let them do their job and allow them room to live a dream.
To you, the-Jack Sparrow-that-once-was, the Defiant fires its starboard guns in salute of you.

Chapter Twelve Update and Current News…
Posted by admin on Jun 01 2008 | Comment now »
My beloved crew, thank you so much for hanging in there with me.
So what exactly IS happening with me? Okay, you knew that May would be a crazy month, but it also turned out to be the final push for not one but two titles, The Pitcher’s Pendant: A Billibub Baddings Mystery and Podcasting for Dummies, 2nd Edition. Amidst these deadlines was the New Media and SF/F event, Balticon 42. It has been weeks of classes, red lines, and networking…
…but the good news: The Pitcher’s Pendant is now in galleys. That’s right: Billi is back on 08.08.08! Take a look at this post, and you’ll get all the details from Baddings Investigations, Inc.
What else is happening from The Captain’s Quarters?
Author and Crew member J.C. Hutchins invited me to write in his universe, a universe far from Royal Guard, swashbuckling privateers, and dwarf detectives. This opportunity meant a lot to me as I am more than just a friend of J.C. Hutchins — I’m a fan. I still remember hearing the opening lines to 7th Son, Book One: Descent, and the trilogy was an amazing ride. Now, I found myself in his world. I wanted to make sure I didn’t let him down.
So, my Faithful Crew, here it is — the long-awaited, highly-anticipated, and seriously-hyped 7th Son: Obsidian. These are short stories set in the 7th Son universe around the time of the nationwide blackout. Along with my own short story, other authors appearing in this collection of original fiction will include:
The Obsidian Experience will also feature original contributions from these podcast personalities:
- Evo Terra
- Dan Klass
- Wichita Rutherford
- TD-0013
- George Hrab
- Soccergirl
- The cast of The Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd
Also featured in this feed will be listener contributions of first person accounts from those trapped in the grips of panic, darkness, and survival. J.C. Hutchins is kicking off Obsidian this weekend with my short story, “Miles To Go Before I Sleep”.
Have a listen, and subscribe to 7th Son: Obsidian
“When the power fails, chaos reigns.”
Oh yeah…and Chapter Twelve? It’s underway. I’ll be talking to you very, very soon…like this week….

Remember when I said May was going to be insane? I didn’t think it would be this insane. Between the classes I’m teaching and Balticon 42 closing in fast, I’m finding it hard to sit down and produce. Chapter Twelve is underway, but far from done.
That doesn’t mean the Captain is neglecting his faithful crew! I’ll have a few more avatars coming out to people, and I’m nearing the end of edits for The Pitcher’s Pendant: A Billibub Baddings Mystery. With all this happening, I put together a little something to let you all know I’m thinking of you.
Enjoy this peek behind the scenes…

I Remember Joe: A 2008 Tribute
Posted by admin on Apr 01 2008 | Comment now »

Joe Murphy started off as a fan with the most prolific and honest opinions of MOREVI. All other book reviews that came after his were put up for comparison, and only Joe’s made me think about this story and in turn made Legacy of MOREVI a better book because of it. That was Joe’s first influence on my life.
Then we became friends.
On April 1, 2007, book reviewer, fellow Sci-Fi fan, and podcaster Joe Murphy lost a battle with Leiomyosarcoma, a very aggressive form of cancer. He was 34. Today marks the one year anniversary of his death, and on this date I wanted to take a moment to remember my friend, Joe.
I still miss you. And I remember…

brought to you by Philippa Ballantine’s Chasing the Bard
and The ScotchCast
Tempting as it is to stretch this out to a three part episode, I don’t think so. Oye ve, have you all been patient, not to mention praiseworthy! Emails are welcome, and you all have been too kind to me…but some of you have been sending me the “Okay, I’m caught up. GET TO WORK!” missives…
And you know what? In the Golden Age of Piracy, the crew had a say in how the captain was doing. So yeah, I’m on it!
Here you go — new guest voices, new characters stepping into the mix, and new twists here and there are underway in Rafe’s return to London…

Sorry for the delay. I don’t want anyone to think the rug was pulled out from underneath me again. I’ve got quite a lot to do this week, but the good news is Chapter Eight is coming together very nicely. New guest voices, some fantastic performances, and all around swashbuckling goodness. The episodes may be longer than usual, but as you all are patient (for the most part…I’m getting some funny e-mails…) I didn’t think you all would mind. It’ll be worth the wait.
You all will be happy to know that one of the things that I’m postponing MOREVI for this week is JC Hutchins’ 7th Son: Obsidian. I’m putting final touches on a short story appearing in that collection. Don’t get me wrong — I love this podcast, but I’m a writer first and foremost and writers should be producing.
Wait a minute…I am producing. I’m producing this podcast. Darn it, I hate it when I trip over myself like that.
Also, I’m working on the edits for The Pitcher’s Pendant: A Billibub Baddings Mystery. Listen on Chapter Eight for an announcement concerning that new title from me. Coming very soon.
Until next week, stay the course….

Hi, everyone!
I must say, this podcast never stops surprising me. I announce an unexpected and unscheduled halt in the production, and my Feedburner stats go UP. And then, from the voice of Askana Moldarin, Pip Ballantine sends me this little tidbit from the iTunes of New Zealand…
(click image for a larger view)
MOREVI is in the Top 15 Literature Podcasts! #13! That’s even better than its debut in the United States. So when you tell your friends and fellow fans of Fantasy about this podcast, tell them “It’s huge in New Zealand!”
So thank you, one and all, for your well wishes and concern. I’m also making a post to let you all know that I am beginning to see a break in the clouds. The fact I finished up several other paying projects on my desk and still had the drive and the time to put together a Survival Guide to Writing Fantasy means I’m almost out of the unexpected slump things here at Imagine That! Studios took. I asked for three weeks of your patience, I’m in the middle of Week Two, and I’m looking to start recording Chapter Seven either tomorrow or Friday. If I can get two chapters ready to go by the end of Week Three, I will be back with a vengeance on March 10.
Stay subscribed. Hold your course. Let people know…Rafe and Askana are almost clear of the storm…

Take a look at what I found on MySpace…

This is Askana Moldarin, as visualized by Douglas, a heavy-duty gamer who takes his online RPGs seriously. (Makes me wish I had time for this kind of stuff…) I remember swapping MySpace mail with him when I went to check his profile and I saw a different picture of this character. Douglas confirmed she was, in fact, Askana. I was flattered. How often do fans take your characters and play them online?
Then tonight, thanks to a Google Alert, I found this:
Douglas is also spreading the word on the re-mastered edition of the podcast. What else can I say but thank you! I am absolutely floored!
Keep that fan art, mash-up videos, and online support coming!

No, you are not seeing things…staying true to my word that I would not drop an epic-sized episode (unless it is a Listener Appreciation Show or something akin to that…), I am breaking up Chapter Two of MOREVI: Remastered into a three part episode.
Three parts?! What?! Am I insane?! How long is this chapter?! Will I drop in another sentence ending with an interrobang?!
The story as to why this chapter is so damn long will be revealed throughout the week, but just enjoy this week chock-full of new content and the guest voices of George Hrab and (making her debut as Askana Moldarin) Pip Ballantine.
More guest voices to come. Enjoy the ride, post a review on iTunes, us a favorite on Podcast Pickle, and make sure to get one friend turned on and subscribe to MOREVI!

Sorry I’m a little late in the posting, but it was a Snow Day here in Virginia, and that meant readjusting schedules and taking care of parental matters. Speaking of priorities, I got some comments on that in this week’s Morevi Matters as well as a few things happening at the Palace of a Thousand Suns.
00:00 — (A Very Quick) Intro
01:36 — Chapter One: Meeting of the Minds
The First Queen of Morevi, Askana Moldarin, holds a private audience with Captain Rafe Rafton. A known enemy to the people of her realm, the privateer is now being offered a commission that is just too tantalizing to refuse…

More good news from MOREVI’s debut
Posted by admin on Dec 02 2007 | 3 Comments »
This one I was a little late on catching, but on MOREVI’s first Friday after the premiere I saw this in the Arts > Literature section of iTunes…

MOREVI debuted in the Top Fifteen! I don’t even think Billi did so well in its humble beginnings, so again my sincerest thanks to you all. And a shout out to Doug200463 who dropped me a terrific review! So yes, tell a friend, write a review on iTunes (or wherever the MOREVI listing invites reviews), and get the word out that Rafe and Askana are returning to the podosphere. Let’s see if we can get MOREVI up to #1 on both Podiobooks and iTunes!
I would continue to assure you all this kind of success isn’t going ot my head…but instead, I’m settling into Imagine That! Studios to work on Chapter One. Get ready to hear the new voice of Askana Moldarin!
You all simply rock Rafe’s world!

What a fan-frelling-tastic way to wrap up a day…

So many terrific comments (and one reoccurring observation I’ll be addressing next week) were making me think “Maybe I didn’t promote MOREVI’s launch as aggressively as Billibub Baddings’, but I think this podcast is going to gain some momentum as we progress.”
But with this unexpected surprise from Podiobooks.com (and I am in terrific company in that Top Ten) is sending me to the Dream Realm with a goofy smile on my face. Thank you, one and all.
Now, don’t worry — this strong first day doesn’t mean I’m going to get cocky or anything. We still have The First Queen to introduce, an adventure to kick off, and a conspiracy to unravel. So yes, the fun is just beginning…
Tell a friend about MOREVI. Give it a review on iTunes. And enjoy the ride!

Welcome, one and all, to MOREVI: Remastered! It is finally here…and to tell you the truth, I was a little worried I wasn’t going to make it. Between being sick and the Mac issues, it came down to the wire, but as promised Rafe and Askana (coming up in Chapter One) are setting sail once again.
Enjoy the ride!
00:00 — Intro
- What a long, strange trip it’s been, but we made it!
- What is Morevi: Remastered anyway?
- Want to know more about what’s happening with Rafe and Askana? Stick around after the break.
02:17 — Prologue: A Leap of Faith
Our adventure opens with the death of a captain and a band of privateers on the run and under fire. At the moment when all appears lost, the Ship’s Navigator takes the helm.

Many, many, many thanks to Dan Kuykendall of PodPress for helping me (once again) with Podpress and WordPress on a whole. Make sure when you’re putting together your own podcast that you give this man the mad props.
And now, to stake a claim for the High Priestess and First Queen…

Hey, everyone!
Well, this afternoon is, once again, a reminder as to why I write the For Dummies book. I was working on the blog this afternoon…and what should be a user-friendly process started turning south.
Fortunately, friends like Cian Mac Mahon and Clair High are out there to help me along. You’re only as good as your support crew. So I must be doing great!
Thanks, guys!
Welcome to the Palace of a Thousand Suns
